8 WAYS I'VE LEARNED TO FIT IN WITH THE FRENCH
I moved to France in 2012 and mon dieu, has it been a journey! Adapting to a new culture takes patience, determination, a healthy dose of curiosity, and a willingness to learn. The more set in our ways we are, the harder it will be. Let me tell you, there’s a whole secret handshake (well, not literally) for fitting in with the French and over the years, I’ve done my best to learn it inside and out. I’m still me, but I have a bit of French flair after absorbing how things are done around me. Here are 8 little things I do to fit in with the French.

5 MAJOR MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT LIFE IN FRANCE!

While the mere mention of France may evoke images of berets, fancy food, and leisurely strolls along the Seine, the reality of life in France is quite different from the clichés painted by popular imagination. Reality is nothing like what we see in the movies 99% of the time. It’s only normal, though, to not know what real life abroad is like somewhere else if we haven’t experienced it for ours...

I'm in my late 50s and work online from home. I'm considering buying a home in France with a gite next to it and a little land. This way, I can have a more steady income and settle. It's all inviting but confusing, too, as to what I would need and how to set these things up, so listening to these videos really helps.

My partner lives in Cannes but he picked me up at a friend’s home in Paris last summer. We drove from Paris to Besançon to Saline Royale Arc-et -Senans to Lyon to Cannes stopping along the way. We also drove all over le Côte d’Azur. He has a device that he prepays to get through toll road pay stations. And yes le rond point is the favorite way of controlling traffic at major intersections. I was also impressed by the number of below ground garages in Paris where he could park long term because we used public transportation in Paris of course.

I was really interested to hear about what people underestimate about life in France. But I was disappointed that the last 4 minutes was spent repeating the same message that you have to do your homework before making the move. The valuable content ended around the 10 minute mark. Still gave it a thumbs up.

WOW! So sorry you had that experience. Have not landed there yet,🛫, What are your recommendations to find a qualified caring physician and not be triaged like I'm at a nail salon. Can we choose? Seems like they are all in a bucket and you just get the next available... We can search the web HOWEVER, I don't see Healthgrades or ratings for French physicians. So so sorry lost my mom to dementia so I totally understand. Hugs to you too Diane. 🤗❤❤❤

Really good informational video! My husband and I are researching a move to France when we retire in 4-5 years. Something of major importance, since we're older, is access to good healthcare. The scenario you mentioned about the boy with appendicitis is EXACTLY what happened to our daughter who lives in Australia. She was sent home twice before finally doubling over at work and then rushed to emergency surgery. Once she was "inside" the system, her care was excellent. She says the same thing about the lack of willingness to "rule out things through medical testing" which is really contrary to how doctors approach cases in the U.S. My dad's a retired doctor in the U.S., so we've been trained to question doctors and demand good care. This is true here in America as well, but I'm not sure how well it would go over in France! It's a really important point to consider when deciding on a big move like this in retirement. Merci! We also believe that anyone seeking to live in another country should absolutely assimilate by learning the language, and they should have something to offer besides lounging in the sun. :)

I grew up in Switzerland where they Kiss. As a child I hated it. Then I moved to New Zealand where I spent most of my adult life. In New Zealand close people give you a hug and if it is a group of people a simple hi everyone does it. Now I have moved back to Switzerland and they still kiss. Three kisses on the cheek. It is seriously annoying. I really don't want everyone's mouth in my face every time I see them. It makes social encounters incredibly unpleasant.

You right on everything, but I learned the hard that "System D" although are real pain to learn can help to blance things out to what you may lose when coming to France! The crazy part of System D there is no book rules to learn and no can really help learn this because we all learn this System D thing at different rates and levels! I have a brother-inlaw how breaks most rules of normals here in France and that is his level of System D levels higher than me more like a thief in my eyes, but all at the same time never actually caught breaking the law, but his famliy is like this, now I am sure the cops know him for this, and yes this is something I could never do; he is one of few that take level of System D! I do not like him for all his games, and System D-ing he is willing to do! Because I am half Ameican I can push to get some things done that some French people would get done all because I could not have knew before this more true if I don't push that I am American so I should get it, but to play a little dumb yes I will next time goes a long way! Where as stateside it is black & white do you have it yes or no next please here in France sometimes things don't move you need to understand why, work around it, and still get it done for American rule followers this is not easy because the French don't always follow the rules when are where you will never know is the one rule we do follow! You must always be ready for the unknown, and at times play a hand you don't have sometimes you win sometimes you don't but it will equal out over time often your ahead of things if you mix it with wine, and cheese with a good meal!

I would add that once you reached a certain level while living in that country, it does not have to be sitting with a book to learn or even going to French classes. It has to be a conscious effort but it can be watching French shows or movies on device where you can stop and look up the expression or word. Also when talking with someone that you feel comfortable with, ask them to explain something you don’t understand or ask how to express something you are not sure of. At some point it is no different than your first language where you want to know more and be able to express more and so you need to make some effort to learn it - be more educated in your own language.

"being the Other". LOVE your feedback on that. My first time in France I spoke 0 French so I observed most of the time. I had a few moments of frustration trying to get my husband's attention so I could communicate and once was brought to tears. On my return to the states I had great respect for anyone who doesn't speak English, regardless of their immigration status. I felt a kinship in a way to be somewhere when you don't speak the language. it is extemely eye opening.

I think that some of the American antagonism comes from two places: First, the world war savior complex that is taught in the US. Second is regarding the language barrier. "Visit a foreign country? Learn at least a little of the language! Don't come here and not speak our language!" Some Amercans don't like the French because the French treat American tourists the same way Americans treat non-Americans. Yes, I know it's a broad generalization, but still amusing.

The US does somethings better. It always finds money for the war machine, but just can't seem to do that for health care, education, infrastructure, etc. There is no reason for Americans to have a positive attitude. One thing they are about equal on is suppressing protesters against government policy.
